'Who's that girl?' Wednesday

The sweet little girl in this photograph is not a member of my family, but instead is the daughter of one of my mother's neighbours in Ringsend, Dublin. Mom once told me the girl's name, but it is lost to me now, although the names Dolly and Dottie seem to stick in my brain. There is a name written on the back of the photograph in very light pencil. It is barely legible, but looks like 'D. Brennan'. The photograph was taken in the early 1940s.

She is such a tiny girl that she does not look old enough to be making her First Holy Communion, since at the time children aged around six or seven were eligible. She was captured in this picture while making the rounds of the neighbourhood to show off her lovely outfit, after her family returned home following her First Communion mass. The little lace dress is exquisite, as is the veil, and the tiny white leather shoes beautifully complete the outfit.

My mom explained that it was common practice for children to briefly visit all of their neighbours after the Holy Communion mass. Mom recalled doing so at the time of her own first communion, and receiving half-pennies or pennies from some of her neighbours, and holy pictures or medals from others, in recognition of this milestone.
